Most stereo microscopes do not give enough working distance without the use of accessory lens.  The use of a Barlow reduction lens on a stereoscopic microscope head will change the focal length and increase the working distance.  A microscope’s working distance is defined as the distance from the bottom of the microscope lens to the top of the engraved specimen as it is in focus.  For the engraver to have enough room for the engraving tools and his hands, a good working distance is required.
